With all the talk about Savita Halappanavar and the Ugandan “Kill the Gays” bill, one thing that’s been overlooked is another bill in Nigeria. This bill, termed the “Jail the Gays” bill, isn’t quite as bad as the Ugandan version, in much the same way that falling out of a plane at 5,000 feet isn’t quite as bad as falling from a plane at 10,000 feet.
The bill mandates 14-year sentences for any gays or lesbians who marry in Nigeria. Performing or even witnessing a gay marriage ceremony would be similarly illegal. People would be arrested for holding hands or looking affectionately at someone of the same gender.
This is a fucking outrage. This bill cannot pass, and if you want to do something about it, there is a petition you can sign.
Go sign it. Then tell your friends.
