Just a few minutes ago, the UN voted overwhelmingly to recognize Palestine as an independent country.  Despite pressure from the US, which is shamefully backwards on this issue, nearly every single country voted for recognition.  The final count was 138-9, with 41 abstaining.

This is huge news, and honestly, it took far too long to happen.  The US has an enormous amount of influence in the UN, and has been blocking this for years.  But hopefully, this will mark the beginning of the end of the Israel-Palestine conflict.  I hold no illusions that the violence and hatred will disappear overnight, but I think this is an important first step.

The US and Israel are being horribly divisive and misleading, as usual.  Israeli President Netanyahu said this:

The resolution in the U.N. today won’t change anything on the ground.  It won’t advance the establishment of a Palestinian state, but rather, put it further off.

Because recognition of a Palestinian state will get in the way of recognition of a Palestinian state, or something like that.  Or maybe he’s just mad that people made this decision without him.  Either way, he’s full of himself.

I can’t wait to see how this develops.  I predict Republicans will use this as a new cudgel to beat Susan Rice with, and hopefully Israel and Palestine can open new peace talks, although I’m not so optimistic about that one.  Regardless, this is amazing news.
